Operations Excellence Intern, L.F. Logistics

June 2019 - Aug 2019

L.F. Logistics is a leading supply chain company, providing warehousing and distribution solutions in Asia for companies like Nike, Converse, Levis and Lululemon amongst others. During my time with the company I was exposed to a whole new side of business, giving me the opportunity to learn about the needs of the market, and the various forces that are at play when it comes to delivering and distrubting items we have almost come to take for granted. I had the opportunity to visit warehouses and see the solutions that we came up with in action, while also giving us the chance to find ways to make the processes more efficient while getting rid of any redundancies.

  • Developed labour management system for Nike, Converse and Levi’s using in-house application.
  • Resolved issues due to synchronisation with previously set up Warehouse Management system.
  • Generated daily reports tracking efficiency of various warehouse processes
  • Worked closely with warehouse managers to reduce total daily untracked time to under 5%

Summer Intern, Cadence Design Systems

June 2018 - July 2018

Cadence Design Systems is at the forefront of chip and System on Chip design, with many world class companies ranking amongst its clients. Cadence gave me my first professional experience and introduced me to the heirarchy and structure of an electronics organisation, showing me exactly why they were pioneers when it came to SoC. The experience introduced me to the development of chips from the planning stage, and how testing takes place via simulations and testbenches. It was an amazing introductory experience that inculcated the importance of team work and a clear line of communication within me.

  • Updated and implemented corrections for error detection protocol
  • Tested synchronisation and efficiency of updates through various testbenches

Projects

Speaker Targeting Algorithm

June 2019 - June 2020

As humans, we are easily able to focus on a specific voice when surrounded by many people who are also speaking, such as in a party. However machines are not automatically capable of this feat, and special models have to be developed to train them to be able to do so. Termed aptly as the 'Cocktail Party Problem', there have been more than one paper written on the problem, along with various principles that can be used to resolve it. As part of my Final Year Project, I partnered up with two other people to develop an algorithm that is capable of speaker separation and recognition. We developed a model based on uPIT to solve the problem of speaker separation.

  • Developed an algorithm for solving Cocktail Party Problem using RNN for speaker separation
  • Implemented deep learning principles for speaker separation and identification
  • Extracted speech averaged at 80% PESQ value of the reference audio for the separated speaker

What Affects Our Choices in Music?

Feb 2020 - June 2020

Music is something that has quickly become an integral part of our lives. With the popularity of Spotify, it has become even easier for us to find our particular brand of music, as well as discover new artists and genres. Over the course of a semester, I teamed up with 3 other students to try and understand whether specific aspects of a song, such as its tempo, beat, lyrics and various other factors had a relation with the popularity of the song. We looked at: Song Popularity over the year, Feature Similarity of various popular songs and a Feature Analysis to see how popular songs usually trend.

  • Created three different visualisations to support our findings
  • Analysed a list of over 200 songs to find similarities and differences in different aspects of a song

Smart Fan

Sept 2018 - Dec 2018

In our daily life, we often leave our fan running even when we're not there, leading to wastage of electricity. To overcome this, me and my partner developed a fan that would switch on only when it detected a user within 60cm of itself. Furthermore, it would change its speed according to the distance between the user and the fan, reducing its speed as the user got closer.

  • Implemented a smart fan using a microcontroller (STM32)
  • Fan was able to detect human presence and switch on automatically
  • Fan speed based on distance between user and fan

  • Hosted talk by various speakers on green living
  • Helped organise events to educate students on the impact of life on the environment

Peer Mentor Program, HKUST

Sept 2017 - Sept 2018

As a freshman, navigating university life can be a somewhat daunting task. Learning how to make the most of the various facilities and services offered by the university, along with deciding and planning ones courses can be quite difficult and we can all do with a little direction when we are starting out. The Peer Mentor program provides freshmen with second year Mentors who were best equipped to understand the situation and the mental state they found themselves in. Through the course of the year, we would regular meet with our mentees to check in on them and make sure they were keeping up with the often hectic university life.

  • Collaborated with other mentors to organise clan activities during the year
  • Counselled mentees and helped them face hardships at critical moments during the year
